How does CoolSculpting/Cryolipolysis works?

Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting® technology enables us to target fat cells beneath the skin, selectively and precisely ie. Subcutaneous fat, and cool them to temperatures that trigger their natural death (apoptosis). This process, known as Cryolipolysis®, results in the treated fat cells becoming crystallized (frozen), and actually die. Because however the fats crystallize faster than normal cells, there is no damage to skin, nerves or other surrounding tissue.

Over time as the treated fat cells shrink and die, your body naturally metabolizes them, eliminating these dead cells, and leaving a more sculpted you. Diet or exercise can only reduce the size of the fat cells/adipocytes, while the CoolSculpting®, the treated fat cells are dead as a result of apoptosis and are than permanently removed from the body as a result of normal body metabolism.

CoolSculpting VS Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires individuals to undergo general/local anesthesia. It works by using large tubes to pull out fat from targeted areas of the body, leaving individuals with immediate results. Contraindications

People who have a disease that is made worse by cold or have hernias in the area to be treated should not have Coolsculpting. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria.

CoolSculpting procedure

A typical CoolSculpting cycle lasts 60 minutes. During the procedure, the doctor gently pinches the fatty area between the CoolSculpting applicator arms. The applicator then cools the area to a temperature that causes the fat cells to crystallize and die, but which does not harm surrounding tissue.

Are the results of CoolSculpting permanent?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they undergo a cell death process known as apoptosis and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body as a result of normal metabolism. Once the treated fat cells are dead, they’re gone for good. Hence CoolSculpting reduces fat, by completely eliminating the adipocytes.

How long is the recovery time?

The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical (non-invasive), so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting session is over. So, we can call it a “Lunch Time Procedure”.

How much time is required to see CoolSculpting results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as four weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months, but your body will flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.

Do I need to follow a certain diet and exercise plan or special supplements after the procedure?

No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after their CoolSculpting treatment.

What if I regain the weight down the road?

Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas. You will however have fewer fat cells in your treated areas, so most patients see increased tone in treated areas, even after gaining weight.

Side effects of CoolSculpting

There have been no serious side effects reported so far.

During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

The bruising may be because the CoolSculpting device sucks the fat against the cooling device. These problems normally resolve within a week. Studies have shown no changes in blood lipid levels or liver function. The numbness is not associated with nerve damage.

A study of 528 patients that underwent a total of 2,729 cycles showed only three cases of mild or moderate pain, which resolved within 4 days[1].
